Nov 22, 2013 - Hanging out with friends at the Navy Pier
Heading to Chicago, Illinois with your friends? If you would look at Navy Pier at one glance, you can see that the place looks interesting for a day out with friends. Located on the Streeterville neighbourhood of the Near North Side community area, this pier was built in 1916 and is one of Chicago’s favourite tourist attraction.
There are many sightseeing tours you can join when at Navy Pier. Some of the companies running them are like Seadog Ventures, the Tall Ship Windy, and Shoreline Sightseeing cruises and Water Taxi service. If you prefer to experience a dinner cruise instead, you can hop onto The Odyssey II, the Spirit of Chicago, or the Mystic Blue, all owned by Entertainment Cruises.
Don’t forget to also visit Navy Pier on Wednesday and Saturday nights during the summer to view the spectacular fireworks display. If you are at the pier during fall, the fireworks display is held every Saturday nights instead.
There are also festivals, fairs and many events held at the Navy Pier at different times throughout the year. The popular festivals are such as the Strictly Sail boat show, and the Chicago Flower and Garden Show. There are even events that coincide with seasonal festivals like Halloween and Christmas, so you can even plan your trip to Navy Pier during these times to take part in their festivities.
For some indoor entertainment, you can visit the IMAX theater to catch some action-packed movies. Or if you feel like enjoying some history, head over to the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows where many of the stained glass windows exhibited here are salvaged from Chicago mansions throughout the ages. While walking around the pier, don’t forget to head right to the far end of the pier to see an anchor from USS Chicago (CA-136), which was previously a Baltimore class heavy cruiser that was used in many famous wars in history.
Since you are at Navy Pier, do also visit the Pier Park, which is an outdoor area on the upper deck located between the Pepsi Skyline Stage and the Crystal Gardens. There you can ride on the magnificent 150-foot tall Navy Pier Ferris Wheel that is equipped with 40 spokes and has 40 gondolas. This ferris wheel was manufactured by Vekoma Rides Manufacturing, a Netherlands-based amusement ride manufacturer famous for building many exciting roller coasters and ferris wheel rides.
There are also other rides available in Pier Park such as a musical carousel, a swinging thrill ride called Wave Swinger, and the Light Tower Ride. For something a little more docile, you can head over to the 18-hole miniature golf course at the park, or try your hand at some token-operated remote control boats.
